I have been asked a few times now about the seemingly ridiculous cost of maternity fashion in particular maternity jeans. Why should we buy $100 + jeans when we can get maternity jeans from some of the cheap chain stores?
Well I guess the main reason is wear and tear. Good quality maternity fashion should be able to withstand being worn every single day if need be and washed very frequently. I have a pair of inexpensive maternity jeans that I bought during my first pregnancy I think they were $45 or so - I was still working full time and wore a corporate uniform 5-6 days a week, so the jeans were worn mostly on weekends. At the end of my pregnancy I could not really wear them while waiting to fit into my pre baby pants as they were so stretched , those jeans as comfortable as they are were stretched and misshapen from my huge belly and did not get a look in during my second pregnancy. My girlfriend on the other hand bought a $180 pair of ‘name’ brand maternity jeans she wore them through both her pregnancies (her second pregnancy she was not working and wore them much more frequently) and also lent them to her step sister and one of our other friends who wore them also, now they are hanging in her closet for just in case a 3rd comes along. And she wore them post baby while waiting to get back to her pre baby jeans While many of us cringe at the thought of spending that much money on maternity clothes, who do you think made the better investment ?
